The Knowledge Shop LA (TKSLA) proudly announces Black Kids Love Math (BKLM) 2025 Summit, a one-day event focused on reshaping the narrative of Black students in mathematics. Taking place in the LA area, this year’s summit gathers researchers, students, parents, educators, and national advocates to challenge systems, share research, and elevate Black student voices in math.
The Story Behind the Summit
Born out of a bold refusal to normalize the academic gap in Black math achievement, BKLM started with the 2023 event "FACTS BET ON ME", where math educators and experts exposed deep-rooted disparities in how Black students are taught and perceived in math. Instead of focusing on blame, BKLM flipped the script—highlighting that Black kids do love math, and the system must learn to recognize and build on that truth.
In late 2023, BKLM began developing research rooted in student voice, asking Black children directly about their experiences with math in and out of school. With support from the National Center for Youth Law and the American Institute of Mathematics, the project received funding to explore how family engagement, classroom practice, and cultural context shape math success.
